Shaw was born in Dublin, Ireland on July 26 1856. His father was originally a corn-merchant but developed a drinking problem. His mother was a professional singer. Before George was sixteen his mother left them with George's older sister, leaving him with his drunk father. Shaw completed his education even though he hated it, he then worked as a clerk for an office which he also didn't enjoy. He moved to London as a young man and lived off of his mother and sister. He worked as a leading music and theater critic. His first novel was meant to criticize the English stage. Shaw was a rationalist, and wrote with precise and witty dialect. When his writings were performed, the stage turned into a showing of different ideas. Some his most famous plays were Man and Superman, Saint Joan, Major Barbara, and Heartbreak House. His play Candida focused on social attitudes towards sex. Major Barbara makes an argument that salvation can only be achieved in political activity, not as an individual. Shaw died on November 2nd, 1950. During his lifetime he wrote over 50 plays.
